Sweet, Sweet Memories
The night of November 1, 2024 was a historic occasion for Las Vegas Lights FC. On that cool autumn night, the fans at Cashman Field witnessed the Lights taking part in a playoff match for the first time in club history. Their opponent? Today’s rival: Sacramento Republic FC.
It was a close match. The Lights dominated possession and generated the clearest opportunities of the game, but it was not enough to score past Sacramento goalkeeper Danny Vitiello.
After 90 minutes of regulation and 30 of extra time, everything was settled in a penalty shootout. And it was precisely at that moment that the legend of Raiko Arozarena was born.
The Cuban goalkeeper stopped an incredible three penalties in a massive performance that propelled the Lights to the next round of playoffs, making history for the club and allowing the fans to dream with the possibility of lifting the Championship trophy.
Now, more than five months later, both clubs meet again. This time, under different conditions.
How Things Stand
The Lights have had one of their strongest campaign starts in history, earning a total of 12 points out of a possible 24 in the USL Championship, always hovering around playoff-qualifying positions. Vegas also lead their Jägermeister Cup group with a perfect record after two victories.
While the team has not been known for its attacking prowess this season, its defensive order has set it apart, making the Lights one of the toughest defensive setups to beat in the entire Championship.
Meanwhile, Sacramento Republic has earned a total of 10 points out of a possible 24, holding the eighth position in the Western Conference ahead of Oakland Roots thanks to their even goal differential. They also won their only Jägermeister Cup match to date versus AV Alta.
Sacramento’s overall performance this season has been rather volatile, but with experienced players and a coach who knows the league and its intricacies like Neill Collins, they will always be a rival that must be taken seriously.
Claves del partido
Estas son las tres claves a tener en cuenta el sábado por la noche para que el equipo se lleve los tres puntos:
Staying Comfortable Away From Home
If anything characterized the Lights last season, it was their tenacity and strength while playing away from Cashman Field. In fact, the Lights were the best visitors in the Championship, earning a total of 25 out of a possible 51 points and keeping a goal differential of 0. Fun fact: During 2024, the Lights earned the same amount of points away as they did at home!
This season, now under Antonio Nocerino, things aren’t looking different. The Lights are yet to lose away from home in three outings across all competitions. In fact, they have only conceded one goal in those three matches (and it was a penalty), showing defensive solidity and order. And it can be argued that the team’s best performance this season has been their 3-1 victory against Orange County SC in California. So, it’s clear that this squad has what it takes to compete properly away from home.
To leave Sacramento with the three points in the bag, it will be imperative for the team to perform at the highest level away from Vegas. And the evidence clearly shows that they can make it happen.
Hold the (Defensive) Line
The Lights’ defense has been the team’s most solid and consistent department this season. The club has managed to keep six clean sheets across all competitions thanks to the efforts of goalkeepers Raiko Arozarena and Nicholas Ammeter and a compact defensive line.
It’s not only that the team allows few goals; they also allow opponents few quality chances. The team’s xGA of 1.12 is the third lowest in the league, meaning that opposing teams struggle to generate quality chances through open play, often relying on set pieces or defensive shakiness to score.
The team’s defensive line has also shown flexibility in form and elements. Sometimes the team plays with a back three, other times with a back four. Under pressure, the team resembles a back five. What’s important is that regardless of the shape, the defensive line works. And with elements like Shaft Brewer Jr. and Younes Boudadi entering the mix and serving as valuable rotation pieces, the club’s defense seems to only grow stronger.
For the Lights to come out of Heart Health Park with a win (or at least a point), the club’s defense must show out again and be up to task.
Stats Don’t Lie
Sacramento Republic are a dangerous rival. Their xGD (expected goal differential) is +0.22. This means that on average they generate more quality chances than each of their rivals. In other words, they score less than they should, and are unlucky in that they also concede more than they theoretically should.
Stats and analytics are not the essence of the game, but they must be taken into consideration for proper analysis. Today could be one of those days where everything “clicks” and things go Sacramento’s way.
For that to not happen, the Lights must not allow dangerous players like Russell Cicerone or Juan Herrera any space or clear opportunities to score, and they must finalize any chance Sacramento allows them to have. This will be a game of calculated risks. The team that takes the smartest risks while hedging their bets will leave the stadium victorious.
